Can finasteride help with hair regrowth?

Finasteride is a very effective treatment for male pattern baldness.

  • FDA-approved in 1997
  • Finasteride promotes hair growth at the scalp while preventing further hair loss
How does finasteride work?

Finasteride is a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor that blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

  • Finasteride reduces levels of the male hormone (DHT), which can shrink hair follicles and cause new growth to look thinner and more brittle
  • Finasteride is an oral tablet taken once a day
How long does finasteride take to work for hair loss?

It can take up to 4-6 months before any noticeable difference is seen.

  • Unlike other hair loss medications, finasteride users will not experience an increase in the amount of body hair (Source: Kaufman, KD, Olsen EA, Whiting D, et al. Finasteride in the treatment of men with androgenetic alopecia. Fiasteria Male Pattern Hair Loss Study Group. J Am Acad Dermatol 1998; 39;578)
  • Must be used every day to see maximum results

FAQ

Need answers?

Is finasteride a good fit for everyone?
There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to medication. Your provider will prescribe the best medication for your hair loss based on your medical history.
Why should I purchase finasteride from Admired instead of my local pharmacy?
While the medication is the same, when you choose Admired, you will have a stress-free experience. No doctor's visits or waiting rooms, no insurance hassles, and hair loss prescriptions are discreetly delivered to your door. Get back to being you again.
When I go off of finasteride, will my hair go back to being thin?

It takes about seven days for finasteride to completely be out of your system after the medication has been discontinued. At that point, your rate of hair loss will return to what it was before you started taking finasteride, which is your baseline. While you will not experience sudden thinning of hair overnight, you will start to lose hair at a faster rate compared to when you were on the medication.

How long do I need to be on finasteride?

Indefinitely, however, 3-6 months to see results.

I hear about terrible side effects. Should I be nervous?

All medications and supplements have the potential for side effects and finasteride is no exception. While the medication is mostly well tolerated, the following are the most commonly seen side effects in order from most severe to less severe. Please note trouble getting or keeping an erection and decreased ejaculate volume are equally severe.

  • Increase in breast size and tenderness
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Trouble getting or keeping an erection
  • Decreased ejaculate volume
  • Skin rash
You should not be taking finasteride if:
Patients with hepatic (liver) impairment cannot take this medication along with women of childbearing age, or women who are pregnant.
Do I need insurance to purchase medications?
With Admired, you do not need any form of insurance, which makes for a much easier path to get your yeast infection meds. We create a more attainable, affordable, and private option.
Does Admire keep my information confidential?

Yes. Please refer to our privacy policy to understand how we protect your privacy.

Can I take spironolactone while pregnant?
No. Spironolactone reduces testosterone levels, which can occur in the baby as well. There are concerns that use during pregnancy can affect genital development in male babies.
