We’re here to help

Does skipping your period have side effects?

Skipping your period with birth control is generally safe. Some people may have light spotting, mild bloating, or breast tenderness, especially at first. But these side effects usually go away as your body adjusts. If anything feels off or doesn’t improve, we can always adjust your method. It’s also important to note that many people may feel better when skipping periods, especially those who have painful, heavy or irregular cycles.

Is it safe to skip your period?

Yes, it’s safe to skip your period using birth control. The hormones keep the uterine lining thin, so there’s nothing harmful building up. The bleed you usually get on the pill isn’t a real period, it’s just a response to stopping the hormones. Skipping it just keeps your hormones steady. You might notice some light spotting at first, but that’s normal and often gets better over time.

Will my period start as soon as I stop taking the medication?

Not always. Some people get a bleed a few days after stopping birth control, while others take a few weeks or even months to get their period back. Everyone’s different. If your period doesn’t return after 1–3 months, or if there’s a chance you could be pregnant, let us know so we can check in.

Can I skip my period naturally or without birth control?

You can’t reliably skip your period without hormonal birth control or medical treatment. Things like stress or weight changes can delay it, but that’s not predictable or recommended as a way to skip periods. If you're looking to manage or skip your period, we can talk about safe options.

How does your process work?

If you forget to take a pill, take it as soon as you remember. If you’ve missed more than one pill or missed a pill during the first week of your pack, use backup contraception for 7 days. For the patch, if it’s been off for more than 48 hours or you apply a new one late, you should also use backup protection for 7 days. When in doubt, check the instructions that come with your method or reach out to your provider for guidance.

How can I skip my period for vacation?

To skip your period for vacation using birth control pills, start taking the active hormone pills from your next pack right after finishing the current one. Skip the placebo (or sugar) pills completely. This keeps your hormone levels steady and prevents your period. You might experience some light spotting or breakthrough bleeding at first, but this often gets better. When you’re ready to have your period again, just take the placebo pills or stop the active pills as usual.

How fast can I get treatment to skip my period?

If you’re already on birth control, you can skip your period immediately by simply skipping the placebo pills in your pack. For those not currently using birth control, getting started is quick and easy. Just share a few details about your health and preferences, and a licensed healthcare provider will review your answers to determine the best treatment option for you. If prescribed, you can pick up your medication at a local pharmacy in as little as 3 hours, or choose free delivery to your door within 48 hours.

What happens to the lining when you skip a period?
When you skip a period using hormonal birth control, the lining of your uterus (called the endometrium) doesn’t build up as much as it normally would. That’s because birth control helps keep hormone levels steady, which prevents the thickening that usually happens before your period. As a result, there’s little or no lining to shed, so you don’t get a period. It’s completely safe to skip, and many people do it to manage symptoms like cramps, headaches, or heavy bleeding.
Where does the blood go if you skip your period?
When you skip your period using birth control, your body doesn’t build up the thick uterine lining that normally sheds as a period. Because the lining stays thin, there’s no extra blood that needs to go anywhere.
What happens to your eggs if you don't have a period?

Hormonal birth control works by stopping ovulation, so the eggs stay inside your ovaries and don’t get released. Rest assured that this is temporary and doesn’t use up your eggs. They’re still healthy and ready for use when you want them.

What is a ghost period?

A ghost period is a light, very faint bleeding or spotting that some people experience when they skip their regular period using hormonal birth control. It’s usually much lighter than a typical period and can look like just a few spots or streaks of blood.
